Blog Support for Motorola Symbol CS3000

The development version of PopScan (for the next version to be released by the end of October 2010) just got support for the CS3000 Scanner.

Whereas the other Miniscanners required a serial connection in the end (though they were providing various virtual USB2Serial adapters and drivers), the new scanner is a total novelty in that it registers itself as an USB Mass Storage device.

Mass Storage support is built into all current (and even old) operating systems – it’s the driver that is used whenever you plug any USB stick to your machine.

This means that for the first time ever, it’s possible to read barcodes from a Miniscanner without the requirement for a dedicated driver to be installed. In most environments this even means that no admin rights are required on the target machine.

Customers of our shop plugin will be delighted too: If you only require to support CS3000 then the work to integrate the applet into your website has just become a lot easier: Because there’s no more need for native libraries, the JNLP hackery can go away, as can the applet-launcher workaround.

Improved usability when reading the scanner (it’s way faster and the auto-detection step isn’t required any more), combined with the admin- and driverless installation instantly make CS3000 to our favorite Miniscanner device.
